Higher pensions could lead to the elimination of the flat tax

The budgetary effects of increasing pensions will be felt in 2009 and to cover the shortfall the Romanian government may have to eliminate the flat tax, increase VAT or reduce infrastructure investments, economist and former Finance Minister Daniel Daianu said.
Daianu said if the opposition Social Democrat Party wins future elections, a VAT increase is possible, as the foreign deficit cannot be reduced.
